This series got me through a divorce, and I am now so Friggin’ excited about the reprints coming in 2012!

From the unofficial site Hirac Delest: http://www.hiracdelest.com/index.htm

Animorphs is a book series based on 5 ordinary kids who witness an alien spacecraft crash in an abandoned construction site. It is here that Jake, Rachel, Marco, Cassie and Tobias meet Prince Elfangor of the Andalite Homeworld who has suffered with fatal wounds from the battle above Earth’s atmosphere.

Elfangor warns them of the danger that their planet is under. A silent invasion has already been begun by the Yeerks, a parasatic species that crawls into the brain of their host and takes over their body, completely overiding any freewill that the host may possess. They have conquered several races already and now they are moving towards Earth.

Prince Elfangor’s race, the technologically advanced Andalites, have been doing everything they can to stop the Yeerks, but they are losing the war. The Andalite forces are spread far too thin among the galaxy as the Yeerks take more and more planets. By the time any help comes, the Yeerks will easily have taken Earth as their next target.

In his final moments, Elfangor gives the five teens a weapon and a chance for them to save their planet by slowing down the invasion long enough until help arrives. He gives them the alien Andalite power to morph. With this power they can now touch any living creature to acquire its DNA pattern and then become that creature for a total of 2 hours.

The Andalite, Prince Elfangor, soon dies after at the hand of Visser Three, the leader of the Yeerk invasion, protecting the five teens as they hide from the Yeerk forces. It is here that the adventure of Animorphs begins.

The series involves stories of these five kids as they fight in a guerrilla warfare against the Yeerks. Left on their own, and with no one to trust, they must fight in a silent war against an enemy that can be anywhere and anybody until help arrives. The series deals with many themes such as slavery, death, and the morals of humanity and war.

The first Animorphs book was released by K.A. (Katherine) Applegate on June 1996, and after 54 regular books, 4 Megamorphs, 4 Chronicles, and 2 Alternamorphs, a TV Series, and an incredible supply of merchandise (transformers, games, etc…) , the series ended with its last book in May 2001.

This is by far, one of the best teen paranormal fiction titles out there. It’s a damn shame that they never published his third novel in the US, or in English for that matter.

From the Official Site: http://www.ravenscliff.com

Devon March is a spirited fourteen-year-old boy with strange, unexplained powers. He can levitate his dog, disappear at will, and make objects move with only his mind. And — since the time he was just six years old — he has had to fight off periodic attacks from the hideous, stinking demons that live deep down inside his closet. He has never understood why he has these powers, or why his closet is a gateway into Hell.
When his father dies, Devon is stunned to discover he was adopted. He senses that his true parentage might explain both his strange powers and the creatures in his closet. In his will, Devon’s father had left instructions that the boy be sent to live at a mansion called Ravenscliff, perched atop Devil’s Rock on the craggy coast of New England. Here, Devon suspects he will find the truth of his past, hidden somewhere in the dark corridors of the mysterious mansion, filled with skulls and crystal balls and shrunken heads.

Indeed, Devon discovers he is a Sorcerer of the Order of the Nightwing and that his heritage is proud and noble. But he learns something else, too: like his closet, there exists at Ravensliff a Hellhole, and the demons are scratching to get out. Worse, still: the spirit of a renegade sorcerer, known as the Madman, may be haunting Ravenscliff, determined to open the Hellhole and set the creatures free.

It is up to Devon to prevent that from happening. But to do so, he will have to do what he fears most.

He will have to plunge into the Hellhole!

From the Official Website: http://www.1049films.com/

When a bank robber’s bullet ends the life of police officer Lois Marrero, her wife of thirteen years, Mickie, is honored as her surviving spouse but denied all pension benefits. When Sam, an Oklahoma rancher, loses his beloved husband of 22 years, long-estranged cousins of his late spouse try to lay claim to everything Sam has. As Mickie and Sam’s lives are put on trial, they are forced to confront the tragic reality that in the eyes of the law their marriages mean nothing. From an historical trip to the Middle Ages, to gay hippies storming the Manhattan marriage bureau in 1971, Tying the Knot digs deeply into the past and present to uncover the meaning of civil marriage in America today.

São Paulo, Brazil. A few days ago two boys who met online, one 13, the other 18, skipped school to go to the movies. It was a date. Watching the film they cuddled, shared their popcorn and a cup of coke. After the movie, they sat in the cinema café. They hugged and eventually they kissed.

Then hell broke lose, changing their lives forever.

The lady at the popcorn machine was shocked. She called the manager. He called the mall security. They called the police. What happened then can only be described as one of the most bizarre convictions on sex assault ever. The older boy was ARRESTED for alleged RAPE.. He was sent to a cell with very real criminals. Not people who gave an innocent kiss, but robbers, murderers and the like. Jails here in Brazil are not like the prisons in the USA or Europe. They are overcrowded, dirty and dangerous.

Law in Brazil is pretty clear – if someone gets into a libidinous act with someone who is under the age of 14, it is RAPE. Works pretty well to put real paedophiles into jail. But when a kiss becomes rape there is a misinterpretation of the law. And there is something else: Images of the older boy showed that he didn’t even look like 18. This was a pure act of homophobia. If they would have been a straight couple–nothing would have happened. If it was a 13 year old boy issuing an 18 year old girl he would get a high-five.

The boy was released Saturday night. His name on the news is now reduced to his first letter (it wasn’t before). He might face 14 years jail for rape. Hopefully he will be free, but he is probably traumatized for life. He is making a university prep course with 140 students on his class. He will now have to face his family, colleagues, school mates and people in his neighbourhood. He will have to face homophobes. The same applies to the younger boy. And everyone knows what happened. And all this because two boys sneaked out of school for a movie, some popcorn and a kiss. Two boys are marked for life.

The Dutch are known for their liberal attitudes toward sex and drugs: while not officially legal, marijuana use and sale in “coffee shops” is tolerated in The Netherlands, as is prostitution, most notoriously in the street windows of Amsterdam’s red light district. Pragmatism, the Dutch have long believed, is better than punitive prohibition — and they’ve got lots of data on their side. While 12% of the American population has smoked marijuana in the last month, for example, the same is true of only 5% of citizens of The Netherlands. (More on Time.com: 5 Little-Known Truths About American Sex Lives)

As Salon reports, this practical attitude — and data favoring it — extends to teenage sex. Two-thirds of Dutch parents allow their 15-to-17-year-old children to sleep with their partners in their homes, according to a 2003 survey cited by the Salon post.

But rather than resulting in crazed teen orgies and high rates of teen pregnancy, abortion or transmission of STDs, the Dutch have far lower rates of these problems than the U.S. For example, the teen pregnancy rate in the Netherlands is just 12 pregnancies per 1,000 girls aged 15 to 19. In the staid U.S., there are 72 pregnancies per 1,000 girls the same age. The Dutch teen abortion rate is 20% lower than that in the U.S. And the rate of HIV infection in America is three times higher than in The Netherlands. (More on Time.com: Study: ‘Hyper-Texting’ Teens More Likely to Have Had Sex, Tried Drugs)

The differences between the cultures, and between the parenting styles in each country, are many, but key among them is attitude toward sex. The Salon article highlights a telling passage from the paper “Sex, Love, and Autonomy in the Teenage Sleepover” by University of Massachusetts, Amherst, sociologist Amy Schalet, comparing Dutch parents’ stance on teen sex to that of Americans:

Dutch parents, by contrast, downplay the dangerous and difficult sides of teenage sexuality, tending to normalize it. They speak of readiness (er aan toe zijn), a process of becoming physically and emotionally ready for sex that they believe young people can self-regulate, provided they’ve been encouraged to pace themselves and prepare adequately. Rather than emphasizing gender battles, Dutch parents talk about sexuality as emerging from relationships and are strikingly silent about gender conflicts. And unlike Americans who are often skeptical about teenagers’ capacities to fall in love, they assume that even those in their early teens fall in love. They permit sleepovers, even if that requires an “adjustment” period to overcome their feelings of discomfort, because they feel obliged to stay connected and accepting as sex becomes part of their children’s lives.

The Sociological Images blog has produced a collection of charts showing just how “awful” the results of realism on teen sex have been in Holland. If parents really want to keep their teens safe, rather than closing their eyes and pretending that kids don’t have sex, they might be better off going Dutch.
From the Official Site: http://www.mormonproposition.com/

Director Reed Cowan initially planned on making a documentary about gay teen homelessness and suicide in Utah but soon realized that the homophobia that prompts otherwise loving parents to kick teenagers out of their homes is deep-seated in current Mormon ideology. Cowan, with his fellow filmmakers, experienced first-hand what it was like to grow up gay in Utah in the Mormon faith, then turned their attention to the historic campaign by the Mormon Church to pass Proposition 8 in California believing that it was the cornerstone of an ideology that has worked for decades “to damage gay people and their causes.” The film is their emotional outcry to what they found.

It’s not earth shattering, it’s not life altering, but in light of all of the recent bullying cases and suicides, I decided to watch some films which bring some of the issues forward.

From the Official Website: http://wpsu.org/outinthesilence

Out in the Silence captures the remarkable chain of events that unfold when the announcement of filmmaker Joe Wilson’s wedding to another man ignites a firestorm of controversy in his small Pennsylvania hometown.

Drawn back by a plea for help from the mother of a gay teen being tormented at school, Wilson’s journey dramatically illustrates the universal challenges of being an outsider in a conservative environment and the transformation that is possible when those who have long been constrained by a traditional code of silence summon the courage to break it.

This can be watched for free via Hulu at http://www.hulu.com/watch/157306/out-in-the-silence
